Legal places to ride!

Riding an ATV, SxS or Dirt bike legally in New York State is a challenge. New York State does not allow the use of public lands for OHV riding like many other states do. Other than a few municipalities (towns and/or counties) in New York that have opened a select few roads to riding with their own seasonal restrictions, the only option is to ride on privately owned land.

Hilltown Riders was founded in 2008 by a small group of individuals looking for wooded trails to legally ride their OHVs. They formed a 501c with a goal to seek out landowners willing to lease all or parts of their property to the club. We are unique from other OHV clubs or ATV parks in that we are a not-for-profit organization run by member volunteers who serve on the board of directors. The club opened its doors to new memberships with a mission to provide safe and legal riding opportunities to others wanting the same. The long-term vision of our club is to promote sustainability of legal riding as well as advocating for additional legal riding opportunities in NYS through responsible stewardship to the land the club owns/occupies as well as respect to our neighbors & communities we ride in.

Funds from memberships are used for new trail expansions, trail signage & markings, trail grooming & maintenance as well as additional land acquisition or leases. Members can choose to volunteer their time and skills in a variety of ways that benefit the club to earn work credits that can reduce or eliminate membership dues in the following year.

The Club is Growing

During the 2020-2021 riding season, Hilltown Riders purchased over 600 acres of land in the town of Day. In 2023, Hilltown Riders purchased two additional tracts of land totaling approximately 400 acres in Day and Hadley. The Club now owns over 1000 acres of land. This riding area is contiguous for seamless trail riding with no public road crossings throughout the entire property. The existing trails are being continuously improved on the properties and logging has commenced which will result in an even broader trail base.

The Club also leases land in the town of Voorheesville which provides another 800 acres of riding in the beautiful Helderberg Mountains. This property offers many trails to explore and beautiful scenic overlooks.

Hilltown Riders is on the lookout for more properties to continue expanding riding opportunities for its members. Be sure to send us an email if you know of a sizeable location that might be of interest!

Your voice can be heard!

Hilltown Riders is successful because of its members. Unlike a typical for-profit business with the primary goal of making money, Hilltown Riders is a club made up of people with a common interest. Members work together to constantly improve the Club and input from members is not only welcome but encouraged.

General meetings are held the second Wednesday of every month. Locations are posted in the Event Calendar

The cost of your membership can be reduced by volunteering!

Work credit may be issued for members who help out at various sanctioned work parties and special events throughout the year. While credits and rewards are subject to change and must be approved by project leaders and the board of directors, typically they are as follows:
